Getting Around Like a Local

San Francisco is a city of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own charm and character. Navigating it can seem daunting, but with a few local insights, you'll be zipping around like a pro.

• Public Transportation (MUNI): MUNI, San Francisco's public transit system, includes buses, historic streetcars, and the iconic cable cars. It's an efficient and often scenic way to get around. Download the "MuniMobile" app to purchase tickets and passes, or grab a Clipper Card when you land at the airport for seamless travel. Remember, cable cars are a must-do experience, but expect lines! Watch out for R or Rapid buses, the local name for an Express bus - You can get further faster but it might skip the stop you need.e.g. the 38 and the 38R share the same route.  
  

• Ride-Sharing & Taxis: Uber and Lyft are readily available, as are traditional taxis. These are great for late nights or when you're short on time. If you're really adventurous you can hop in an autonomous taxi from Waymo and let the car do the driving.
  

• Walking is Wonderful: Many of San Francisco's most beloved attractions are within walking distance of each other. Wear comfortable shoes – and if you use Google Maps for walking directions, be sure to check the elevation changes along your route - you'll be encountering some hills!
  

• Biking: For the adventurous, bike rentals are plentiful, offering a fantastic way to see the city's sights, especially along the waterfront.

• Fisherman's Wharf & Pier 39: Yes, it's touristy, but for a reason! Enjoy fresh seafood, watch the sea lions at Pier 39, and take in the views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
  

• North Beach (Little Italy): Explore charming streets, historic cafes, and some of the best Italian food outside of Italy. Don't forget to visit City Lights Bookstore, a literary landmark.
  

• Chinatown: The oldest Chinatown in North America, this vibrant neighborhood is a sensory delight. Discover ornate temples, bustling markets, and delicious dim sum.

• Grab a Mission Burrito: This is non-negotiable. Head to The Mission and find a taqueria that speaks to you.
  

• Explore Ferry Building Marketplace: Located on the waterfront, this historic building is a hub for local artisans and food vendors. It's the perfect spot to grab a gourmet coffee, fresh pastries, or a farm-to-table lunch.
  

• Go for Seafood: Being a coastal city, San Francisco boasts some of the freshest seafood around. Beyond the touristy spots, check out restaurants in the Embarcadero or North Beach for a more authentic experience. One of our favorite places is La Mar in the Ferry Building. It's the San Francisco branch of a Peruvian restaurant with what we think is the best ceviche (cebiche in Perú) in the world.

• Dress in Layers: This is San Francisco's golden rule. The weather can change in an instant, from a sunny day to a foggy, chilly evening. A light jacket or sweater is a must.
  

• Book in Advance: If you have your heart set on a popular restaurant or attraction (like Alcatraz), book your reservations well in advance, especially during a major conference like Dreamforce.
  

• Know Your Hills: As we already said, San Francisco's iconic hills can be a workout. Be prepared for some steep climbs, and don't be afraid to take a different route or hop on a bus if you get tired.
